My name is Josh Duffy and I began my journey in education while working full-time at a day habilitation center for adults with disabilities. This experience opened doors for me, leading to a program, where I worked with children with autism in school and community settings. That opportunity led to further roles in parent training and providing special education services to children at home.
I eventually became a teaching assistant in Roslyn Schools, focusing primarily on students with autism. During this time, I pursued my teaching license in Special Education, which ultimately led me to Louis Armstrong Middle School as a 6th Grade Special Education Teacher.
When I’m not teaching in the classroom, I spend time tutoring on the side. Many of these students are in main stream classes. I fInd that my experience with special education comes in handy with regular education students that are struggling and need extra support. I have been told that I am a “great” tutor because of my ability to break things down and explain concepts well.
I knew Special Education was the right path for me. Reflecting on my own school experiences, I understood what it felt like to be misunderstood, lost in the shuffle, and lacking confidence. I also knew the power of supportive teachers who made a difference in my life. Their encouragement shaped my teaching philosophy, and I strive to do the same for both my students In my classroom and the students I tutor.
I work with students facing a range of academic, social, and emotional challenges. My goal is to help them grow in all areas—no matter how small the progress—by fostering a love for learning, resilience, and a sense of responsibility. I emphasize excellence over perfection and encourage students to take ownership of their efforts, successes, and failures.
